Week 5 Meikle C DIY news an alternative culture?

I don’t think those people who want to make DIY news online should be though of as an alternative culture, I think that these people represent modern day. These people are advancing with technology and are adapting to the changes that technology is bringing. The communicative advancements that the internet brings, in turn, brings along the idea of an ‘open architecture’. The idea of people being able to add to news topics or write their own, doesn’t mean they are an alternative culture, because it isn’t that dissimilar to people having their own blogs or writing on forums etc. Indymedia is just giving people the freedom of speech that Turkle writes about and what is also shown on websites such as BlogSpot and forums on newspaper websites. Everybody has the ability to speak their opinions on the internet and this website is advancing with this. The quote ‘I belong to a blank generation’, in my opinion not only describes Indymedia, but describes the internet as a whole, and people can build on it as they wish. However, this idea of ‘open news’ may not give the information that the audience want. The people writing on these sites may not have any actual journalistic skills or contacts which may make their story as solid as an actual journalist’s one the stories can be edited, changed or reworded by people, then the view of the story may be lost and could distort the meaning of the story.

  1. I agree that they should not be thought of as an alternative culture, as there are only typing their thoughts on the internet and just because it is on a particular site and subject doesn't necessarily mean that they should be thought of as 'different'. But, if they are doing something 'different' in a collective almost, is a culture? Who defines what an alternative culture actually is?

  2. that's a good point and i suppose they are doing something different compared to what they can do on other mediums. But because the use of the internet is so widespread now i don't really think its an alternative culture...it's just the culture we live in, and the technology we use fits into where society is at the time.
