Week 9 Q3 Education

Yes, I think an education should stretch a person because it is about learning new things. If you do not stretch yourself then you are not pushing your own boundaries on what you can learn and what information you retain. By stretching yourself and learning new information you are able to form your own understanding and opinion on a subject, which may help you with your future, career etc.

If you stretch yourself it shows a clear separation between people who work hard and people who don’t which could benefit you in your future career because of grades and references etc.

Education does have a role in the work culture. Even though the work you do in say R.E or Science may not necessarily apply to the work you do as say an Admin Assistant, your grades in these subjects reflect your ability to work hard, meet deadlines etc, which are all qualities that employers want to see. Stretching yourself in education therefore has an effect on your future career.

Prensky’s idea of digital natives and encouraging them to use technology to learn, including E-Learning, may take away from these qualities that employers look for. As in E-Learning you work at your own pace, make your own deadlines etc there will be no competition from other candidates and there is no evidence you will work harder than them.
