Journal Criticism 5
The idea that parents have to try and incorporate media into their children’s childhood which played no part in there own criticises the idea of socio-determinism. Socio-determinism means that technology is formed to suit society; therefore the technology which has been produced must not be unreachable for people in society. Livingston’s argument suggests that the technology may be too difficult for new audiences, but with people having different priorities they may not necessarily feel inclined to use new technology. For example, young generations may use new mobile phones, new gaming equipment etc because that what appeals to them. This doesn’t mean that older generations can’t use them because they don’t understand them, but because they have different priorities and don’t want to spend their time on these games.

i do think that sometimes games don't appeal to digital immigrants, however i think some digital immigrants rely upon new technology rather than us digital natives.
ReplyDeleteyeah i agree, but prenksy's idea is generalising for everybody in society because of their age, there is no room for exceptions. I don't think everybody is going to fit into each individual definition
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Claire, it is impossible to generalise when your spliting society into only two groups. Prensky doesnt take into account those who have money and are able to afford new media technology and games and those who wont be able to up-date their technology.
ReplyDeleteI also feel that, as well as young generations having the newest phones etc because of it appealing to them, it is also because when your young popularity, and keeping up with everyone becomes very important, especially around teenage years.
Adults feel that they dont need the newest technology because that is not part of "being cool" for them.
Hope this makes sense!
Yeah it does make sense and I agree with your points :)
ReplyDeleteand then at the same time you can get the pig headed men that want the new everything. the flashy cars, phones etc
ReplyDeletehahahahahah sorry thought i would add that sexist point in there
Let's keep it theory-based if we can.
ReplyDeleteYou are making decent arguments and criticisms in all of these posts Claire, and I'm pleased to see you bringing in unit concepts - socio-determinism etc. Keep doing this - the more you do it, the more I know you know your stuff!
